Netflix Film ‘The Social Dilemma’: The Link Between Social Media & Mental Health

There are approximately 792 million people in the world suffering from a mental health disorder. That number has risen dramatically in the last few years, leading to a question of why

There are many hypotheses, such as simply the increase in understanding and acceptance of mental health issues.

But, the Netflix film ‘The social dilemma’ takes a look at mental health issues and it’s connection with social media usage. It asks whether this is one of the problems that arrived with the rise of social media and what the effects of social media on modern society are.

Summarizing ‘The Social Dilemma’

This film was created and directed by Jeff Orlowski to look at the problems that arrived with the rise of social media. He is known for other documentaries that address environmental issues, such as Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral.

The film recognizes that social media is here to stay and is used by the majority of the world. But, is it something that changes and shapes your behavior every time you use it? Or is it simply a useful tool?

Orlowski spends time interviewing high-ranking executives that have quit from the biggest social media companies because they had moral misgivings regarding the algorithms used by the companies and their true purpose.

Splatterings of these interviews course through the film.

The Power Of Social Media

Millions of people log onto their social media accounts every day in order to check in with friends and see what their favorite people are doing.

Those who have the most followers are known as influencers. They can earn millions as companies fight to have them represent them. One good tweet can boost company sales dramatically. Little more proof is needed of the power in social media.

The Effects Of Social Media On Modern Society

The original and perhaps intended effect was to provide a means for people to stay in touch, in real-time, no matter where they are on the globe.

But, it has now led to a generation of people addicted to social media. They crave the attention of others and often blindly follow the advice of the people they admire online.

Perhaps the most worrying part is that people don’t need special skills to be social media influencers, just a willingness to put themselves out there, and perhaps a desire to be rich and famous.

The film illustrates how social media is changing the way we view ourselves and each other. The drive for acceptance and the ease in which people can be duped or bullied online is lined with a dramatic increase in cases of depression and even suicide.

What ‘The Social Dilemma’ Teaches Us

Netflix film ‘The social dilemma’ teaches us that if you’re not paying for a product you are the product.

This is one of the problems that arrived with the rise of social media or the effects of social media on modern society. The internet makes everything seem accessible and free. But, all the companies offering you services for free are making millions off your personal data.

This film follows a typical modern family as they become more and more addicted to the power of social media. The family is fictional but could be many of the families you know.

It shows how the artificial intelligence behind the algorithms carefully directs the viewer’s attention to specific pages, neglecting ‘normal’ life in the process. It’s illustrated perfectly by the son slowly stopping all activities outside of his computer.

That’s the real point. Social media isn’t just selling your data, it’s actually influencing your behavior, changing it a little at a time.

The Bottom Line

‘The Social Dilemma’ highlights the dangers of social media and how it is changing society. The addictive side of it and the increase in suicide rates are of serious concern.

However, it should also be noted that there are many positives to social media, such as the ability to stay in touch and for business to attract new customers.

Is social media affecting mental health? It would seem likely as people become more addicted and less involved in the physical world.

Perhaps the better question is what are we going to do about it?
