The last year hasn’t been easy for anybody, and things have been particularly difficult for people in relationships during the coronavirus pandemic. Many couples have been forced to work from home and spend a lot more time together than in the past
Even people in stable relationships have been in need of some happy relationship tips. Since the ongoing pandemic has created new challenges for couples, we wanted to share some tips for a healthy relationship in lockdown.
Don’t Sugarcoat It
There’s no sense in trying to hide from it or pretend like it isn’t a challenge. It’s okay for you and your partner to acknowledge that relationships during coronavirus are difficult. Perhaps you’re stuck at home with each other day after day. Perhaps one of you lost your job. There may even be children in the equation to complicate things further.
The first thing you need to do is accept that things aren’t going to be normal anymore. There will be new challenges and you’ll have to redefine some parts of your relationship. Don’t try to run from it or sugarcoat the situation. Just take everything as it comes and accept that your relationship will be tested in new ways.
Take Stock of What’s Important
As mentioned earlier, couples will have to reevaluate their situation and redefine the state of their relationship as part of this new world in which we’re living. You may need to let go of some of the minor issues that existed in your relationship previously and stop letting the little things bother you.
Take some time to think about the things that are important. Are both of you still healthy? Do you have a good home? Do you still have one another? Try to remember that this situation isn’t ideal for anybody and that there are people out there who are probably much worse off. That should help give you some perspective and make you realize that little annoyances in your relationship aren’t worth arguing about.
Find New Couple Activities
Pandemic or not, one of the most important happy relationship tips is to spend quality time together as a couple. Even if everything else in the world has changed, this shouldn’t. The only difference if you may need to find some new activities since your old ones may not be possible until the world starts to reopen.
It could be something as simple as cooking together or even sitting quietly and reading together and then sharing with the other person what you’re reading. Binge-watching the same TV show could also work as long as it’s something you both enjoy and gives you a chance to talk about something and stay connected with the other person.
Have Your Personal Space
One of the best tips for healthy relationships in lockdown is making sure each person has access to their own personal space. Each person should pick out one room or one corner of the home where they can go to get away from the other when they need space and a break from the other person.
This is particularly important if you’re both working from home or one of you is temporarily unemployed. Going for walks alone or having pre-scheduled quiet time around the house are also ways that people can maintain some personal space in these unusual circumstances.
Find Time for Intimacy
Last but not least, couples need to find the time and motivation to be intimate with one another. Of course, that was true before the pandemic, but now you may have to go about things in a different way. Perhaps you’re at home together all the time and a little sick of one another. Perhaps you’re feeling stressed or anxious, which might be killing your sex drive.
Again, these are unique circumstances and you have to be willing to change the way you go about things. Whether it’s having sex or cuddling, both people need to make an effort, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. Ultimately, finding that physical intimacy just might be the thing that helps you get through the lockdown.
