Most of us tend to put celebrities on top of a pedestal, but most of them are just like us. They lie, misspeak, or play practical jokes, oftentimes at the expense of fans who hang onto their every word
There are countless examples of celebs lying or actors messing with fans, which inevitably lead to false celeb rumours being started. Most of the time, this is all in good fun, so we wanted to recount some of the times that celebrities lied or misled fans in a way that nearly broke the Internet.
Joaquin Phoenix Doesn’t Do Yoga
The enigmatic and eccentric Phoenix has dated some A-listers over the years, which is why he put fans in a tailspin in 2014 when he announced that he was engaged to his yoga instructor. However, this turned out to be an instance of actors messing up fans because the man who played The Joker was playing a practical joke.
Members of the paparazzi spent a lot of time and energy trying to find a person who doesn’t exist in reality, much like a few of Joaquin’s characters. In reality, Phoenix has been in a relationship with Rooney Mara since 2016, and in 2020, the couple welcomed a son they named River after Joaquin’s late brother. We’re not even sure if Phoenix does yoga in the first place.
Miley Cyrus’ Pre-Mature Wedding Announcement
Nobody ever claimed that Miley was the sharpest tool in the shed. At one point during her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, she mistakenly announced that she was “so happy I’m married” to Hemsworth. Since the two were longtime subjects of celeb rumours, we assumed it was true, nearly breaking the Internet.
But the news turned out to be not true, as Cyrus jumped the gun by stating the couple was married. Of course, the on-again-off-again couple eventually married, only to divorce after two years, leaving Miley still searching for love.
Terrence Howard’s Fake Degree
Among all of the stories about celebs lying, this is one of the biggest. After all, if you’re going to lie, you might as well go big. That was Howard’s approach when he mentioned to Jimmy Kimmel that he had a doctorate from South Carolina State University in chemical engineering. We should have suspected right away that it wasn’t true because there are not too many similarities between actors and chemical engineers.
The truth is that Howard spoke at the school’s commencement in 2012 and was given an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. How Howard got from humane letters to chemical engineering is anybody’s guess. South Carolina State University doesn’t even have a graduate program in chemical engineering.
Ben Affleck’s Back Tattoo
Affleck used a tattoo to play games with the media and fans everywhere. In 2015, Affleck was photographed on the beach with a giant tattoo of a phoenix covering most of his back. When the paparazzi published their pictures, the Internet went nuts, as it wasn’t exactly the most attractive collection of ink.
At first, Affleck lied and said that it was a temporary tattoo for an upcoming movie. However, he eventually came clean that it was 100% real and there was no such movie. The actor has claimed that it’s meaningful to him but hasn’t disclosed much else about the tattoo or why he got it.
Ed Sheeran Fights a Princess and Loses
In addition to being a great singer, Sheeran has a rather wholesome appearance and persona. That’s why he turned some heads when there was a scar spotted on his face. There was a rumor going around that Princess Beatrice, the daughter of Prince Andrew had made the mark during a sword fight. As farfetched as that might sound, who are we to question what famous people and members of the Royal Family do in their spare time.
However, fellow singer James Blunt eventually sold Sheeran down the river by coming clean about the scar. Blunt simply said that Sheeran cut himself while drunk. Apparently, things could have turned out a lot worse and Sheeran was lucky to escape with nothing more than an embarrassing story.
