Part of the trouble is that most people don’t understand why you have the fear of failure in the first place. If we’re being honest, this isn’t the easiest thing to recognize and understand. However, we’ll do our best to help with some tips on how to overcome the fear of failure.
Define Failure on Your Terms
One of the best ways to get over the fear of failure is to create your own definition of failure. Just because you didn’t succeed or reach your goal doesn’t mean that you failed. Can you find a silver lining? Is there a way that you made progress even if you didn’t accomplish what you set out to do?
Knowing that you can find a silver lining or a purpose for doing something will prevent you from thinking that you’ll automatically fail if you don’t meet your goals. This perspective will make you more willing to try because you’ll understand that everything is a process and a journey rather than viewing everything as either success or failure.
Break Down Your Fears
The next step is understanding why you have the fear of failure. This means writing down a list of the things that you’re afraid of and what will happen if that comes to fruition.
It’s important to be careful with this activity because you’ll essentially be writing down the worst-case scenario. But when you do this, you’ll see that the world isn’t going to end if you fall short of something. There are always ways to respond to setbacks and come back from them, which is why you shouldn’t be afraid of taking chances and failing.
Set the Right Types of Goals

If you find yourself being afraid of failing or being worried about trying something, do something beforehand that can give you a confidence boost. Use this as a stepping stone on the way to success. When you start to feel better about yourself and confident in your own abilities, you won’t be afraid of trying something difficult and challenging.
Don’t Pretend It Doesn’t Exist
The worst thing you can do when it comes to fear is to ignore it or pretend it doesn’t exist. Fear can be a good thing; it keeps us from doing dangerous or stupid things. Imagine jumping off a cliff without being afraid. There would be something wrong with you if you weren’t afraid.
A little bit of fear can be a healthy thing in any situation and it’s okay to acknowledge that you’re a little afraid. The trick is learning how to control that fear and make it work for you. Use it as a motivating factor to inspire yourself to be brave and rise above any fear you have of failing at something or coming up short. Acknowledge to yourself when you’re a little afraid while at the same time proclaiming that you’re not going to let it stop you.
