Jim Carrey was born in 1962 and discovered his talent for impressions when just eight years old. He became known through his work on “In Living Color” between 1990 and 1994. But, it was his role as Ace Ventura that made him a star and led to an impressive list of films.
He is mainly seen as a comedy actor but has undertaken several more dramatic roles, such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.
1. He Worked As A Security Guard & Janitor
This doesn’t sound overly different from stories you’ll hear about many major celebrities. Except, one of the things you didn’t know about Jim Carrey was that, when he was a teenager, his family struggled financially and were homeless.
His dad ultimately got a job at titan Wheels tire factory in Scarborough and, in return for being allowed to live in one of their houses, Jim and his brother John would work the night shift as janitors and security guards.
2. Jim Carrey Is A published Author
One of the best fascinating facts about Jim Carrey is that he is a published author. His first children’s book was released in 2013 and in 2020 he released a novel. Both of which have been commercial successes.
3. His Father Inspired Him To Try Stand-Up Comedy
Part of what makes Jim Carrey special is the amount of creative energy he has. It has been said that his teachers used to let him have time at the end of each lesson to have creative outbursts instead of continually disrupting the lessons.
It was his father who encouraged and helped him to write his own routine. Carrey made his first appearance when he was just 15 and was heckled by the owner. It unnerved him but he switched to the New York comedy scene and by the time he was 21 was on The Tonight Show.
4. His First Film Role Was in 1981
One of the things you didn’t know about Jim Carrey was that his first film role and the major acting role was in a made-for-television film called “Introducing……Janet”. The film wasn’t a great success although you may have seen it.
It was re-released in 1995 after Jim Carrey became famous, the film was renamed “Rubberface”.
5. Carrey Didn’t Get Along With Tommy Lee Jones
After the success of Ace Ventura and “Dumb and Dumber”, Carrey played the Riddler in Batman Forever. While Tommy Lee Jones was complimentary about Carrey in the press, privately he told him that he hated him and would not sanction his buffoonery.
6. He Could Have been Captain Jack Sparrow
Jim Carrey was offered the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, a role that has been brilliantly portrayed by Johnny Depp. If it hadn’t been for a scheduling problem with the production of “Bruce Almighty”, Captain Jack may have looked and sounded very different.
7. He Appeared On A Postage Stamp
The fact that Jim Carrey appeared on a postage stamp is something that makes Jim Carrey special and is potentially one of the most fascinating facts about Jim Carrey!
It happened in 2014 when the Canada Post released a set of postage stamps featuring current comic greats. There were six of them although Jim Carrey is perhaps the most famous.
8. He Vanished from Hollywood
You may have noticed that Carrey was missing from Hollywood for several years. He states that his original plan was not to join Hollywood but to destroy it. In fact, he became part of the Hollywood machine and, when he realized that, he simply left.
Today Jim Carrey is back but he no longer feels he needs to be the top-billing star, instead he is focused on projects that are close to his heart.
9. He Wrote To Tupac Shakur
When Tupac was in jail Jim Carrey wrote to him. He said it was simply to make him laugh while behind bars.
